Challenge FAQs

Sustainability Pledge

FAQ

What is sustainability and how does it help fight climate change?
Sustainability means taking care of the planet so that future generations can enjoy clean air, water, and resources just like we do today. It's about making choices that protect nature and people over the long term. Everything we do - how we eat, what we buy, and how we use energy - affects the planet and contributes to climate change. Climate change leads to rising temperatures which causes extreme weather like stronger storms, droughts, floods and heatwaves. It can also harm animals, melt glaciers, and affect the air we breathe. By making small, sustainable choices, we can mitigate the adverse effects of climate change, ensuring a healthier planet for future generations.
Why are we taking the Sustainability Pledge?
Our daily actions have a direct impact on the planet! The goal of this pledge is to help Ismaili community members, their families and friends globally understand how their choices can help make a positive impact. Simple, everyday actions can have a lasting impact.
How does the sustainability pledge work?
By taking the pledge, you commit to making conscious, sustainable choices in four categories: Minimize Waste, Conserve Water, Reduce Energy Consumption, and Responsible Food Choices — all of which contribute to a healthier, more sustainable future. Every day, log which actions you did for each category. The more you do, the more your virtual tree grows!
What actions do I need to track?
Every category has many actions you can do daily:
  • Reduce Energy Consumption: Actions include unplugging your devices and using natural light.
  • Minimize Waste: Actions include reducing, reusing, and recycling.
  • Conserve Water: Actions include shorter showers and turning off the tap when brushing your teeth or doing the dishes.
  • Responsible Food Choices: Actions include eating less red meat and planning your meals to avoid waste.
The more actions you do, the more trees you can grow!
How do I earn awards?
To earn awards, log the actions you completed to help grow your virtual tree. Each completed action earns you water drops, which will grow your tree.
  • Bronze: Grow 1 tree
  • Silver: Grow 2 trees
  • Gold: Grow 3 trees
  • Certificate: Grow 4 trees and you will get a digital certificate from Rahim Firozali, Chair of the GE International Advisory Committee
  • Free water bottle: Grow 4 trees and attend one Ismaili CIVIC event and you will get a free water bottle in Dubai at the GE Festival
Get started today and see if you can grow your full garden!
How does the virtual tree work?
Your virtual tree grows based on the number of habits you track daily. Each time you log a habit, you "water" your tree. As you consistently log your habits, your tree will grow bigger and healthier. The tree represents your commitment to sustainability, and as you unlock awards, you'll see your tree evolve into different stages of growth.
How are the environmental impact metrics (like water saved or CO₂ avoided) calculated for each action?
Each action is based on researched environmental data and averages from credible sources. You can view the full justification sheet with impact values here.
Why is this pledge important?
The simple actions we take every day, like reducing waste or conserving water, have a significant impact on the environment. Through this pledge, we're collectively contributing to a more sustainable world. Small habits, when practiced by thousands of Jamati members worldwide along with their family and friends, can have a powerful impact on both the environment and our global community.
How do I track my progress?
Once you sign up for the pledge, you can log your daily actions directly through the GE Challenges platform. You'll be able to view your impact dashboard, which shows how your habits are positively impacting the planet in real-time. This includes things like how much water you've saved or how many trees you have grown. The more you track, the more you can see the bigger picture!
Can I invite others to join the pledge?
Yes! We encourage you to invite your friends, family, and community members to join the pledge with you. Together, you can create a team and track your collective impact. It's a fun way to motivate each other and make a bigger difference together. Sign up today at https://gechallenges.ismaili/.
How can I get involved with the Ismaili CIVIC events?
Attending Ismaili CIVIC events is a fantastic way to further your sustainability efforts and earn your Ultimate award. Check the CIVIC page for a list of upcoming events near you to see how you can get involved: https://the.ismaili/civic
What happens after the pledge is done?
Once you've completed the pledge, you'll have developed new sustainable habits that can make a lasting difference. We hope you continue tracking your habits and sharing your journey with others. The tree you've grown is just the beginning – your ongoing commitment helps drive positive change in your community and the world.
How can I share my journey?
We'd love to see your sustainability efforts in action! Share your progress on social media and make sure to tag us and use the hashtag #OneJamatOnePlanet to inspire others and show the positive impact you're making.
